Tummy tuck surgery is performed to enhance your abdominal section. Sometimes it is incorporated with other surgical procedures, such as liposuction or lifts. Usually, this procedure is done after someone has lost a significant amount of weight.

It is important to know what this surgical procedure involves before opting to have it. General anesthesia is administered. There are times when some patients will have an IV in order to help them get sedated.

During the tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon will make an incision across the abdominal area. They start at one end of the hip and cut to the other end. As the surgeon makes the incision, it is done so that the scar can be hidden when a person is wearing certain clothing, such as underwear.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon removes the excess fat and skin from that section of the abdomen. Then, the surgeon closes up the incision with sutures. The belly button (navel) has to be repositioned.

If there is not a lot of excess skin and fat, the surgeon may perform an endoscopic tummy tuck. This is where an endoscope is used and placed in the incision. The muscles will be tightened and the surgeon will close up the area with sutures. With this procedure, liposuction is used to get rid of the excess fat.

In the event of excess fluid building up inside, a tube is placed in the incision so the fluid can drain. Of course, this is performed prior to the incision getting sewn up. If the fluid is not drained, the build-up could cause complications in the abdomen. This is not good because the patient may be required to have more surgery.

During the surgery, if there are any abdominal muscles that have been detached or are not strong enough, the surgeon will have to use sutures to repair them. Sutures are used in order for the muscles to get tight again. The result will be a flat stomach for the patient.

With the belly button (navel), it is repositioned by creating an opening in the skin. The skin gets stretched and repositioned after the excess skin has been removed. The surgeon pulls the belly button and places it in the opening. The belly button is then sewn in place.

As the surgeon sutures the incisions, they may also have to insert drains prior to placing bandages on the wounds.

After the tummy tuck surgery, you will probably be uncomfortable and in some pain. The surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help you with the discomfort. It can take several weeks for you to recover due to the invasive procedure. Make sure to check with your surgeon to see when you can resume physical activity.
