The post-surgery results of your tummy tuck surgery will mostly depend on how honest and forthright you are about providing information to the surgeon. They will need to know your medical history, so it's important that you do not deliberately mislead him or omit any details. Doing so can cause you to have a setback if they find out something you failed to address during the consultation.

When consulting with the surgeon, you will need to advise him your reasons for wanting the surgery. For most people, it is a matter of looking better. Those that opt for tummy tuck surgery feel that their stomach is protruding too far and looks visible to others. They also feel that exercising does not work for them. Or if they do exercise, when the weight comes off, they are left with sagging skin. So they resort to a surgical procedure to get rid of the excess fat and skin.

Another phase of the tummy tuck consultation will include providing the surgeon with a list of prescription medications that you are currently taking. The surgeon will also need to know of any medical conditions you are dealing with, along with any allergic reactions to medications.

If you are taking vitamins or supplements, you will need to disclose that. If you are a smoker or drink alcohol, provide that information as well. Your surgeon will advise you to stop smoking and drinking several weeks prior to the surgery, if you are a candidate. Smoking causes your skin not to receive the oxygen it needs for your blood vessels.

If you have had any surgeries prior to the tummy tuck surgery, your surgeon will need to know. If the surgery was recent and involved cutting, then this surgery may have to be postponed for another date.

The surgeon will want you to have an examination to see if you are healthy enough to go through with the surgical procedure. If you have any pre-existing conditions (i.e. diabetes), that will have to be taken into consideration.

If you are a candidate for any type of tummy tuck surgery, the surgeon will want to discuss the available choices. You may not need the traditional procedure if you don't have a lot of excess fat and skin to be removed from your abdominal area. If your situation is minor, then you may qualify for a mini-tummy tuck or an endoscopic type of procedure. Both of these are less invasive than the traditional. There is not as much fat and skin that has to be removed from your abdomen.

The surgeon is required to discuss with you what you can expect after the surgery is completed. You need to know that you will experience some pain and discomfort. However, you will be able to take prescription medicine to make it easier for you. The surgeon will also provide you with additional post-surgery instructions on how to take care of yourself. You will need to know how to take care of your wound, how to take care of your swollen abdomen and making sure that you are eating the right foods. Eventually, you will need to start light exercise. Of course, that will also be discussed with your surgeon.

So it's important that you fully communicate with the surgeon during your consultation. It can make the difference between a positive and a negative outcome after your tummy tuck surgery.
