If you have a bulging stomach, there are several ways it can be corrected. One of the most common ways is to have a tummy tuck. In general, a tummy tuck helps to get your abdomen in shape and makes it firm and flat. Some surgical procedures of this kind require an excess of fat and skin to be removed. Others require the strengthening of your abdominal muscles.

Some of the ones that are most commonly used include:

The Traditional Tummy Tuck
The Mini-Tummy Tuck
The Endoscopic Tummy Tuck

With a traditional tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), a surgeon will remove excess fat and sagging skin from your abdomen. The surgeon will use general anesthesia while performing this surgical procedure. A long incision is made from one end of your hip to the other end. The surgeon will then remove the excess fat and skin. Once that is done, the incision is sewed up with sutures. In the process, your navel (belly button) will be repositioned and your abdominal muscles are tightened. The end result is a flatter and firmer abdomen.

A mini-tummy tuck (partial abdominoplasty) is used for those that require a less invasive surgical procedure. In this case, the surgeon will only need to use local anesthesia. The surgeon will make incisions, but they will be smaller than those of a traditional tummy tuck. Excess skin and fat is still removed, but not as much as with the traditional procedure. Also, it is not necessary to reposition your navel (belly button). Your abdominal muscles may or may not have to be tightened.

An endoscopic tummy tuck is similar to a mini-tummy tuck. With this surgical procedure, only a small amount of excess skin and fat will be removed from your abdomen. For this procedure, an endoscope is used. An endoscope is an instrument that is comprised of a tube that has a camera attached on the end. This allows the surgeon to see inside of your abdomen. The tube is illuminated to provide the surgeon with better lighting. With this kind of surgical procedure, the scars are small and not visible. This surgery is also for those who need a less invasive surgery in their abdominal area.

Regardless of what surgery you have, it is important that you follow the post-surgery instructions provided by your surgeon. That would include taking your prescribed medicine for pain and discomfort, cleaning your wound properly, resting in bed for the amount of time needed, eating the right kind of foods, staying away from foods that are loaded with sodium, making sure that you are draining the excess fluids properly (to prevent infection) and exercising when you get the green light to do so. These things can make for a speedy and efficient recovery if you stick with the process.
