As anyone who has tried to lose weight knows, the process gets harder as you go on. Whether the excess weight is the result of poor nutrition, childbirth, or natural aging, the sad truth is it is extremely difficult to get the body you want. Even at or below your target weight, fat still clings to areas where you don't want it, creating unsightly sags or bulges. You may be sticking faithfully to your diet, walking instead of driving, and even hitting the gym on a nightly basis, and yet you still can't budge that last little tummy bump, the saddle bags, the thunder thighs, or flapping arm underhang.
Frustrated, you may move on to more extreme measures. You may endanger your health with fad diets, try body wraps or other expensive spa treatments, buy thigh creams, magnetic belts, even electroshock equipment. The costs mount up, and your self-confidence goes down as day after day you see the same bulges in the mirror.
Finally, like most people embarrassed by excess body fat, you come to the depressing conclusion that those last stubborn pockets of fat aren't going to go away on their own, no matter how hard you work out, how low your carb count is, or how much thigh cream you use.
Some people in the above situation turn to liposuction. It has the advantage of being able to target fat in specific areas to a much greater extent than diet or even exercise, and many of the results are immediate, eliminating the need to hide through yet one more swimsuit season while you wait for the effects of your exercise program to kick in.
There is a danger to liposuction's instant gratification, however. While it is useful for the person who is watching their weight but just can't seem to get rid of a few unsightly bulges, it isn't an instant fix that offers permanent results for any lifestyle. Liposuction removes fat cells, but there is no guarantee that new ones won't grow back in the same places if the person puts on weight again.
While the results of a successful liposuction treatment can give a chronic dieter new determination by boosting their confidence in themselves and their appearance and giving them a chance to start over, it is not a cure. If a person is unwilling to make necessary lifestyle changes, then ultimately liposuction is just a waste of money.
