Some patients who undergo surgery to remove or reduce fat think they can then eat whatever they want and not gain weight. While the fat cells that are removed, never grow back in that area, other fat cells in other areas can become engorged with overeating, resulting in fat in other areas of the body. It is never a good idea to over indulge in high fat foods.

Surgeries such as liposuction and tummy tucks permanently remove fat cells from the body. As adults we do not grow more, so in essence, once the fat cells are gone they are gone for good. Patients are given a second chance to get on a healthy diet and exercise routine and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is a great starting point to make a change in your life.

Once healed from a tummy tuck or liposuction, a patient should eat a diet low in fat, complex carbohydrates versus simple sugars, and lean proteins such as turkey, chicken, beans and eggs. Exercise that elevates the heart rate for thirty minutes should be performed at least three times per week. Vitamins, minerals and probiotics are great ideas to keep healthy.

Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia. An incision from hip to hip across the abdomen and above the pelvic bone is made. The skin and fat are lifted so the surgeon and correct any sagging muscle by stitching it tightly together to create a firm base. The skin is then stretched and pulled tightly over the abdomen to the incision point. The excess skin and fat are cut off and the flap is stitched back to the incision point.

Generally the incision is below the line of jeans, pants, bathing suits and underwear. The surgery can be done on an outpatient basis for healthy patients.
Patients are required to wear a compression garment for three to five days to prevent swelling. Pain medication is prescribed and the patient is usually on bed rest when having this surgery combined with sex reassignment surgery. Strict adherence to post operative instructions is essential in the healing process. Getting back on a good healthy diet and walking daily helps speed recovery of both operation sites. Full recovery generally takes up to six weeks with full results of a tummy tuck in six months to a year. In this time, bloating may exist as well as bruising.
