For many people, the word "liposuction" conjures up images of plastic surgeons either cutting fat out of the body, or using something very like a vacuum to suck it out. Happily, those days are quickly coming to an end. Changes in technology and practices have led to a far less risky and far less painful form of fat loss surgery than what many patients have used in past years, and now more than ever there are a wide range of options available to the person seeking to surgically lose weight.

Because of the rapid advances in the liposuction field and the many new technologies being introduced, often many widely different techniques are all lumped together under general umbrella terms such as "non surgical" or "low impact". While the various options are designed to give the patient more choices and help them get exactly what they want, sometimes the terminology can be confusing.

One popular new technique is laser based plastic surgery. This procedure uses a laser to melt the excess fat. The melted fat can then either be drained surgically or can be left in place, allowing the body to flush it out naturally. The laser is able to target only fat cells, allowing the surgery to take place with minimal discomfort and almost no recovery time. Another advantage of this method is that the heat from the laser stimulates collagen growth and tightens surface skin, so there is frequently no need for additional surgery to take up loose skin afterwards.

In injection based cosmetic liposuction the doctor injects a number of drugs, proteins, and enzymes into the areas in need of treatments. These injections cause the surrounding fat cells to burst, after which the body simply flushes them out as it would any other irreparably damaged cell.

A third option is ultrasonic liposuction, in which the doctor injects a gel into the fatty areas, similar to injection based liposuction, then uses ultrasound equipment to burst the gel, which breaks up nearby fat cells. Both the gel and the fat cells are then flushed away naturally by the body.

Many clinics offer more than one method of performing liposuction, and they frequently also offer free consultations to prospective patients, so if you want more information or are interested in finding out which of these procedures would work best for you, call several clinics in your area and make appointments. Not only can you learn more about what each has to offer, you can also take the opportunity to compare pricing and the experience and record of the doctors.
