Before "getting physical" became a big thing in the 80's, fitness was not part of the average person's lifestyle. It was something that only athletes and athletic types engaged in. However things have dramatically changed. Today working out whether in the gym or at home is a normal part of many people's routine.

People have various reasons for starting on an exercise regimen. Some do it for aesthetic reasons, others just want to achieve better health and still others are made to exercise as part of the treatment for a health disorder they are suffering from.
Exercise is not easy to like. Many people find it a burden to have to workout and this is normal.

However, the interesting thing about disciplining yourself to do your exercises is that in time you will find that it has become a part of your system and that your body seems to crave for it. There are even cases where people become addicted to exercise, or more specifically to the endorphin high that comes with strenuous physical activity.

In the meantime, while you have not yet developed the intrinsic motivation to exercise but at least want to make it part of your life, there are some practical things you can do to make fitness a priority in your life. Below are seven ways to help you make a commitment to fitness.

1. Decide. This word comes from the Latin root "decidir" which means to prevent any other possibility from occurring. Make a firm decision that you will stop compromising your health. Make a list of reasons for this decision.

2. Block off your exercise time in your daily planner and consider it a must-do.

3. Get a fitness trainer and pay a cash advance. Consider it an investment and you create a positive mindset about it. You would want to make sure that your money does not go to waste and with exercise, it is largely up to you if that would happen or not. When you commit your money to something, the tendency is to take something seriously.

4. Choose a friend or family member who is important to you and make a fitness commitment to him or her. When you involve a friend or family member, your level of commitment is deeper.

5. Write yourself a reminder about why your health and fitness condition is important. The act of writing about it will help you stay focused and keep fitness in your mind. The few minutes it takes to do psychologically boosts your commitment to your fitness goals.

6. Join a group class where you can find like-minded individuals from whom you can get support. They will help a lot in keeping you motivated.

7. Sign up for an organized fitness activity such as a walk-a-thon, 3k run or swim meet. Spend your time training for it like a real athlete. By committing to participate in these events, you cut off any other possibility from happening. Having an actual event to look forward to will help keep you motivated and focused. And the great sense of accomplishment you will experience once you have done it will greatly boost your commitment to the lifestyle.

Start with making the simple decision of making exercise a part of your daily life. Give yourself a couple of weeks to develop the habit. Use the tips above to guide you and in time you'll be fit as you've never been before.
