The process of reproduction is based on the process of fertilization. Fertilization refers to the fusion of the male and female gametes. Male gametes are generally referred to as sperms while female gametes are called eggs or ovum. In the process of fertilization, sperms enter the vaginal tract of females as a component of the male ejaculate or the seminal fluid. The sperms fertilize the egg, thereby forming the zygote which then differentiates or metamorphoses into the embryo, leading to child birth.
During the course of sexual intercourse, the seminal fluid of the male is ejaculated into the reproductive tract of the female. The seminal fluid contains millions of sperms, but out of these millions, only one of the sperm succeeds in fertilizing the egg and forming a zygote. The rest of the sperms either die while they travel through the reproductive tract of the female or facilitate the process of fertilization.
When the sperms enter the vaginal tract of females, they undergo a process of capacitation. Capacitation is a term which means the process of reaching the ovum prior to other sperms. The process may also be inferred in terms of Darwinian Theory, that is, Survival of the fittest. The sperm that survives in the different conditions of the cervix of females better than others, may fertilize the ovum.
The sperms, on entering the female genital tract, move towards the ovum, which is in the fallopian tube. Females have a pair of fallopian tubes each of which bears the ovum, alternately. Now, the sperms which are millions in number get diverted to both the fallopian tubes and as such, half of the sperms are eliminated from the stage of fertilization.
Now, the rest of the sperms that are diverted to the fallopian tube carrying the ovum, compete with one another so as to reach the ovum and fuse with it to fertilize. The sperm that first reaches the ovum succeeds in the process while the other sperms may serve as facilitators of the process. They may form a lining around the fused egg and the sperm thereby protecting them from the chemical conditions prevailing in the cervix of the female. These sperms may also provide nutrition to the fused pair of ovum and sperm.
As such, there are a millions of sperms that participate in the fertilization process, while only one sperm succeeds in fertilizing the egg. This is why male semen has millions of sperms.
