During tummy tuck surgery, the surgeon will use a drain to collect excess fluid from your abdominal area. The drain is composed of a clear tube that is connected to a bulb shaped container. It is inserted through a minor incision. This cut is usually below the larger one. The surgeon determines exactly where the drains will be inserted and connected.

The tummy tuck drains are to be emptied several times a day. As the fluid is emptied, you have to squeeze the bulb shaped container. Squeezing them helps with the fluid drainage. These containers can be attached to your clothes with a pin or other support attachment.

Every day, you will have to measure the drainage. The surgeon will keep up with how much fluid is drained daily. If there are abnormalities with the drainage, such as a foul odor, change in color (usually very red), or if the fluid amount is more than usual, you should contact your surgeon. If there are no measurement markings on the container, then find a measuring cup to measure the fluid and make note the amount.

You are allowed to shower while the drains are inserted in your abdomen. Make sure that the washcloths are clean and they must be free of bacteria. Also, you are not allowed to use scented soap. Instead, you should use an antibacterial soap. You do not want to use anything that could have bacterial in it.

While you're showering, you can make a belt with the tubes and bulb containers. You can attach the bulbs to your belt. If you have a hanger (preferably plastic) you can take your homemade belt and hang it on there.

Be careful when you have finished showering. Since the tubes are still attached, you must be cognizant and remember to take the tubes and bulbs with you. You will be painfully reminded if you don't remember to do that.

The tummy tuck drains can stay on you as long as three weeks. Or they can stay on you as little as three to five days. The length of time you will keep them on will depend on the amount of fluid that you drain. Plus, the drains may come out at different times. It is up to the surgeon as to how many stay in and how many can be removed.

When the fluid has stopped draining, the surgeon removes the tummy tuck drain. Some people experience different feelings when the tube it taken out of your abdomen. There are some that may experience pain and there are others who may experience a weird feeling.

You may also experience slight bleeding as it is removed. However, that does not happen with everyone. It should take a few more weeks after the removal for you to be healed with a nice new look in your abdominal area.
