Enzymes are basically essential in the existence of an organism. Within the human body, these protein molecules play two major roles: to facilitate the chemical reactions all throughout the body and to breakdown food components in order for the nutrients to be easily absorbed by the body.

However, when the body is not able to produce or accumulate a good amount of enzymes to carry out the tasks, imbalances are likely to occur, resulting to various illnesses. Enzymes are very specific and work on a lock and key mechanism. Meaning, a particular enzyme can only work on a specific food component. For example, the digestive enzyme amylase only breaks down carbohydrates while the enzyme lactase only breaks down lactose.

The body needs various nutrients and these are provided by the food eaten. And in order to harvest the various nutrients from food, the body must be equipped with the right amount and types of enzymes needed to digest the food. However, when the body is enzyme deficient, the nutrients cannot be properly absorbed by the body. At the same time, the body will have intolerance for certain dietary components, resulting to diseases.

Suffice it to say, in order to maintain the balance of chemicals within the body as well as the proper functions of the glands and organ, the G.I tract and all its components must be able to perform well. Not only is the physical aspect of the human body is affected by the process of digestion but the mental and emotional aspects as well.

One very important chemical in human body that relies on proper digestion is the brain's neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are responsible regulating brain function, relaying communication from nerve to nerve within and outside the brain. They are responsible for sending messages from the nerves to every muscle and organ within the body. Thus, neurotransmission affects the overall functioning of the body, including mood, pain, hormone regulation, metabolism, and digestion.

So how can one maintain the balance? It can be achieved by helping the body come up with the right amount of enzymes to help with the digestion and absorption of nutrients needed to fuel neurotransmission. To comprehend the correlation, one must take into consideration the amino acids.

Amino acids serve as the building blocks of all proteins and hormones while also acting as essential neurotransmitters throughout the body. Amino acids are derived from dietary protein. And in order to harvest these vital elements, enzymes are needed to cleave proteins derived from food. If the enzymes are insufficient and these proteins are not properly digested, the body will then experience imbalances in the neurotransmitters and hormones.

However, enzyme and nutrition deficiency is only one of the various causes of the imbalances in the neurotransmitters. Other factors include neurotoxicity and drugs. A way to address this concern is by taking supplemental enzymes and amino acids, detoxification, and sticking to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Still, diagnosis by and consultation with health professionals are highly recommended.
