You may have heard of complex ovarian cysts called chocolate cysts. Here's the scoop on these unsavory growths that can lead to pain and other female complications. This type of cysts develops when some of the material of the mucous membrane which lines your uterine walls breaks away and becomes implanted within one or both ovaries. Complex ovarian cysts contain both fluids and dense materials.

This separates it from the simple cyst which is generally fluid (mucus, water or blood) filled. These cysts will not present problems unless they are enlarged and then complications can develop. Enlarged cysts which threaten rupture or other complications can be surgically drained.

The medical term for a complex ovarian cyst is endometrial cyst and these are also commonly known as chocolate cysts. So called because they contain a sticky brown material (the solid or thicker material) from bleeding into the cavities during menstruation. These cysts commonly present as multiple cysts and affect both ovaries.

This cysts are associated with the disease endometriosis, a condition in which endometrial cells are deposited outside the uterus. These cells continue to react to hormonal changes within the body causing them to churn out more small cysts on the ovarian tissue.

Consequently, treatment of these cysts may involve using hormones or anti-inflammatory drugs to treat the endometriosis. Although there are some side effects with hormones they effectively treat the worst symptoms which are pain and infertility. Other traditional treatments may include surgical removal or laser treatment. In advanced circumstances where pain is ongoing and severe, a hysterectomy may be recommended.

When you have complex ovarian cysts or endometriosis you experience severe pain. Usually this is an aching in your pelvic area. You probably notice it more in conjunction with your monthly cycle. However, this pain can really take you out of action as it is debilitating that what other women experience as menstual pain.

Other symptoms of complex cysts are menorrhagia or excessive menstrual bleeding, bleeding in between periods and pain during sexual intercourse or when you have a bowel movements.

Herbal ingredients associated with the holistic treatment of endometriosis include Vitex agnus-castus (also known as Chasteberry), Don Quai and Milk Thistle. Both Vitex agnus-castus and Don Quai act as hormone balancers and are well know for their beneficial effects when treating female reproductive disorders, while Milk Thistle is particularly effective in the treatment of liver problems.

Complex or chocolate cysts and endometriosis are still a bit of a mystery to modern medicine as the cause is not nailed down. There are, however, a number of options that are less invasive than hormonal treatment or drug therapy. Traditional Chinese Medicine has the potential to cure the conditions leading to complex ovarian cysts and endometriosis.
