Those who have lost weight in the area of one hundred pounds or more may have excessive sagging or loose skin. Our skin does not always go back to the way it was after it was stretched due to weight gain. Surgeries exist in removing the excess skin from behind the arms, under the neck, from the thighs and buttocks and from the abdomen.

The surgery to remove excess skin from the abdomen is a tummy tuck by removing large flaps of skin and other tissue that can sometimes interfere proper hygiene. This type of surgery can be covered by health insurance if a doctor deems it medically necessary. Since the surgery maintains a certain health standard and follows a medically required procedure, insurance may cover all or at least part of the surgery. It is often the last step for those who have lost weight for health reasons on the advice of a physician.

Patients are required to be generally healthy and to have maintained their weight for at least six months. They should also be disease-free. The patient should be aware that scarring is a result of the surgery and should judge for themselves whether the scarring versus sagging skin is more of a concern. Reconstructing the abdomen takes longer than a general tummy tuck because of the amount of tissue often removed. Scarring is also greater and is difficult if not impossible to conceal in a bathing suit.

Recovery is often extensive, resulting from the size of the incisions in the body. A compression garment is needed to be worn for three days and nights to reduce swelling and bruising. Pain medication is often prescribed and a drain may be inserted to drain fluids. Being sure to follow post operative instructions is necessary for a quicker and safer recovery period.

This type of surgery can greatly alter the life of the morbidly obese. Surgeons make sure that patients receive detailed instructions on how dealing with any complications that may arise. Most situations can be handled over the phone or with a prescription called in to your pharmacist. Sometimes, a return trip to the hospital may be required for corrective action.

The key a successful recovery keeping lines of communication open with your doctor before surgery and after surgery by being honest and making sure to follow post operative instructions while reporting any abnormalities to your doctor following surgery.
