All surgery carries risk and without doing some research and finding out if you are a good candidate, you can put yourself in an unhealthy situation. This applies plastic surgery including fat reduction surgery. While it may seem like a circular puzzle being that the fat is making you unhealthy and the fact that surgery on your unhealthy body may pose risk, being informed is the best way to go. A consultation with a certified doctor can help you weigh your options.

If you in good health overall and close to your ideal weight you are mostly likely a good candidate. However, if you are in bad health, or you are at least one hundred or more pounds from your ideal weight, a doctor might recommend a health program before any type of surgery is performed.

Liposuction and laser liposuction patients are those who want to lose no more than 10 to 15 pounds of body fat in specific areas. Their health is good, they follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. For those one hundred or more pounds overweight may be recommended to receive gastric bypass surgery, but might need to be put on a health regimen for a few months before surgery to get the body in condition to withstand the operation. A tummy tuck is recommended for those with more fat in their mid-section and for those who have more fat to lose than liposuction can safely handle. However, they are not obese enough to require gastric bypass. The majority of us fall into this category.

The majority of candidates are women who have had multiple pregnancies, those who have once been obese and have excess skin and some fat, those over sixty with sagging skin, men who are predisposed to carry fat in their mid section and anyone who carries most of their fat in their midsection. This surgery works well on those who are within 30% of their ideal body weight and want to lose loose and sagging skin and fat that diet and exercise has not helped. It is a requirement that the patient has maintained a stable weight for at least six months, has good skin tone and elasticity, is emotionally stable and understands that there will be scarring and that there are risks to the surgery. Recovery time is two weeks of light activity with pain medication. Final results may not be seen for 6 months to a full year.
