What Results Can I Expect from My Liposuction?

Liposuction is a field that's growing all the time. More and more people are choosing liposuction as a way of removing excess pounds and improving their appearance. But how well does it actually work? The internet is filled with horror stories of botched celebrity plastic surgeries as well as glowing promises by liposuction surgeons and their affiliates. This article will try to steer a middle course and acquaint the reader with what the actual results of liposuction frequently are.

The first thing to know is that liposuction is not a miracle cure designed for significant weight loss. Liposuction is not intended to be a substitute for healthy living. A typical procedure will pick one or a few target areas to remove fat. As such, it is not ideal for total body weight loss. For that, the best solutions are the old standbys that everyone knows: a healthy, balanced diet and regular, frequent exercise. A liposuction procedure can remove up to 10 pounds of fat, but typically no more.

The second thing you should know is that liposuction results don't appear overnight. When you first get home and take off the bandages, you may not see anything spectacular. In fact, you will probably be somewhat grossed out. During the first little bit after liposuction, the target area swells significantly, which can obscure the fact that fat has been removed. Also, the area may be significantly bruised, and it will probably ooze. Many types of liposuction involve the injection of fluids and local anesthetics, and these fluids will drain from the body within the first week or two. Your doctor may ask you to wear a compression garment while you are recovering. This will help aid in your recovery, and it will help to bring down swelling.

However, even if the results are temporarily obscured, don't be worried; it does get better than this. Over the course of weeks or months, swelling and bruising will begin to go down. You should certainly begin to look thinner at some point between the first and third month of recovery. At this point, you may notice that your skin looks loose and baggy. If this is the case, do not be overly alarmed. Your skin will continue to tighten over the next few months, and it should reach its full tightness within six months of your surgery.

Like all surgeries, liposuction has the possibility for complications or problems. Although modern liposuction techniques tend not to leave very noticeable scars--typically shorter than a quarter of an inch, and sometimes much smaller than that--there are nonetheless blemishes that can form. In addition to bruising and scarring, you could experience a change in skin pigmentation or develop a sense of numbness in the skin. If your surgeon is not sufficiently skilled, you could end up with uneven or unpleasing results. Cellulite problems in the target area will not be cured by liposuction and can even be made worse. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction can cause burns. And all forms of liposuction carry with them the small but real possibility of serious injury or death. On the other hand, the majority of people remain perfectly safe throughout their surgery, and many of them are very pleased with the results.

If you would like to get liposuction, consider attending a consultation with a surgeon in your area. Many surgeons offer free consultations to potential clients. Consultations like these can be extremely helpful in helping you to know what liposuction could do for you and whether or not you are interested.
