Vaporizers have been used for centuries to cure a variety of ailments, although this invention has only recently gained popularity in North America. Our ancestors were very creative and resourceful in using vaporizers as a natural means to treat a variety of ailments, although they lacked the modern technology that we use today.

A 4th Century BC historian named Herodotus, wrote about the Scythians of Asia and their cultural practices. The Scythians enjoyed the use of cannabis as an intoxicant by first building a tent around a circle of hot stones. They placed hemp seed on a dish over the stones and waited for a potent smoke to be created. Because red-hot stones were used as a heating source, the hemp was vaporized rather than burned. The misty vapor was inhaled and gave the natives a euphoric feeling. By inhaling this smoke, they found they were delighted and shouted with joy. This was one of the earliest recorded uses for an herbal vaporizer.

Many nations have been involved in the development of vaporizers for a variety of uses. The early Egyptians also used hot stones as a heat source to vaporize their herbs, and vaporizers were used for centuries in India and the Middle East to smoke tobacco, called hookah. In the late 15th century, tobacco smoking was introduced to the early European settlers by the Native Americans. Although smoking tobacco was new to the European nations, cannabis had been used for centuries to heal many illnesses with its medicinal properties.

Vaporizers became popular in modern American society when in 1993, a Cherokee medicine man named Eagle Bill worked with a cannabis grower from California. He showed the grower how to use a heat gun to vaporize the weed to create a potent and pure vapor, referred to as Eagle's Peace Pipe.

The first electric vaporizers were developed in 1994 in Canada, and since that time, their popularity has grown. A German inventor named Marcus Storz created the first known Volcano vaporizer in the late 1900's. He developed a removable valve balloon that can be attached to a vaporizer to temporarily store the misty vapor for later use, and patented this invention. The Volcano Vaporizer became available to the public in the year 2000.

Cannabis has been used as a treatment for those suffering from cancer for many years, and with the widespread use of vaporizers, the positive health benefits of cannabis can be realized without exposing the body to the harmful toxins present in smoke. This fact gives hope to those suffering from incurable diseases, who can benefit from the medicinal and therapeutic elements in cannabis without any exposure to the harmful effects of smoke.

Today there are many different types of vaporizers available, and modern technology allows us to control the temperature of the heat source digitally. This means the herbs do not burn, but vaporize at their optimum temperature.

The price of vaporizers ranges from $50 to several hundred dollars depending on the type of heating source and their level of sophistication. Vaporizers offer a natural alternative to traditional medicine and smoking. By vaporizing the herbs, the pure plant ingredients can be enjoyed without the harmful and unhealthy effects of smoke. Vaporizers are also commonly used as a method to stop smoking, for aromatherapy, to humidify the air, or even to enhance the flavor of cooking.
