Your pursuit of weight loss is not restricted to just your body. Aside from conditioning it by eating right and exercising regularly, you should also be in a positive psychological state for everything to work as it should.

Below is a report on a study made on this subject:

A study was conducted to determine the psychological aspect of weight loss with women as subjects. There were three groups one was made up of 28 women who were once obese, lost weight but gained it back; another group of 28 also lost weight but were able to sustain their lighter weight for a year; the third group was composed of only 20 women, all in a good state of health.

The women who regained the weight they lost were found to base their self-esteem on their weight and form, have a tendency to see everything only in black and white, do not focus on weight management and have eating habits that depend on their mood.

The researchers concluded that the psychological make up of an individual may influence both the reason why he or she would want to lose weight as well as the outcome of his or her weight loss effort.

There were other similar studies done previously which included both men and women. The results revealed the same mentality among the subjects who failed in their weight loss attempts. It was found that these people had impossible weight goals and that they were not confident about making their own decisions.

On the other hand, the successful subjects in the study were shown to be responsible and psychologically stable, intrinsically motivated, had a good support network, and were able to deal with the struggles and stress in their lives.

The two studies mentioned above simply shows how big a role an individual's mindset plays in weight loss. The success or failure of a weight loss attempt is heavily dependent on the way a person thinks. If you can identify with the troubled individuals mentioned in the study, you should take the effort to seek professional help. Attend counsel groups and other forms of support communities.

"There's a sucker born every minute"

If it were not so, then the weight loss industry would go out of business. The truth of the matter is, weight loss manufacturers will never create and sell a product that would get rid of excess weight permanently because eventually, they wouldn't have people to sell it to. Weight loss is big business and the secret is that manufacturers have created a situation wherein people are convinced that the products would work and they continue to use these hoping to see satisfactory results but this hardly ever happens. As long as there are overweight and obese people, there will always be suckers supporting the weight loss industry.

In a nutshell:

- To achieve permanent weight loss, you need to make a serious commitment to switch to a healthy lifestyle. Finding the perfect diet and exercise regimen is good but your weight loss success will largely depend on your attitude, self-discipline and strong motivation to achieve your goal.
- When you find a diet which you believe would work for you, ask yourself this question: Can I eat this way for the rest of my life?
- A good and healthy diet regimen should provide you with information about how to eat healthy
- Choose a diet program that will not make you dependent on certain products such as diets shakes, drinks, or energy bars.
- Choose a diet program that includes an exercise component. A diet program without an accompanying exercise regimen is practically useless.
- A good diet regimen should also provide some form of psychological boosting to support the dieter.

Conclusion

Some important points to stress and clarify:

What has been discussed in the article above does not necessarily apply to everyone. Those who are already physically active for instance, already follow their own nutrition guide. Also exempted are those suffering from medical conditions who require treatment which includes a special diet. This article is therefore for people who are caught in the vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting which there are a lot of.

When it comes to dieting, your work does not end when you reach your target weight. The diet plan you followed to lose weight should be replaced with a maintenance plan. It should not be as stringent or hard to follow as your original diet program. You can even indulge in your favorite food once in a while. However, this does not also mean that you are free to go back to your old ways with food.

If you have decided to get rid of that excess weight, start setting your goals, create an action plan and get to it, a.s.a.p! It is not going to be easy but it is my hope that you would use the information shared in this article to better face weight loss challenge and ultimately emerge the winner.
