Smoking causes eventual heart attacks! At least this is what TV shows tells us every day, and you can read it everywhere - Smoking Kills! But what is it that happens in your body and leads to hypertension when you smoke? Why does smoking cause a rise in blood pressure? The answer is in the diameter of your blood vessels.

Cigarettes contain lots of toxic and fat chemicals. Many of them accumulate in your blood vessels. Over the years there is so much toxic waste being accumulated in the cardiovascular system, that some blood vessels are just being plugged. This is where the high blood pressure comes into play as a result of smoking. Due to the narrowing down of the blood vessels, the heart becomes unable to provide the body with enough oxygen. The result of this effect is an oxygen undersupply. In this situation the body has to react to ensure a sufficient oxygen supply in the body.

The heart exposure increases, as it is not able to keep the oxygen supply up constantly. The relieve stress the blood pressure is being increased to ease the work of the heart. You can see this as a chain reaction. The longer the process goes, the higher the damage to the cardiovascular system. A lower blood vessel diameter means a higher blood pressure. At a point where the blood pressure has passed a certain barrier we talk about hypertension.

Hypertension means that the blood pressure is dangerously high and a result of such a high blood pressure might be an apoplectic stroke. The risk increases the longer this process goes. Not to mention that the heart takes damage too, when the cardiovascular system is being harmed - The probability for heart attacks increases together with the blood pressure, this means that hypertension and heart diseases go hand in hand. The whole process is being considered a disease that is called arteriosclerosis.

Preventive actions like doing sports and a healthy nutrition can slow down the progress of arteriosclerosis, but not stop it. The only way to stop this process is to stop smoking as soon as possible. Healthy nutrition and sports can be of great value here.

No matter for how long you have been smoking - It is never too late to stop smoking! Only a few years after you have given up smoking, the risk of cardiovascular diseases decreases to normal, no matter if you have been smoking for 10 or 30 years.
