Adrenal glands are triangle shaped and situated on top of the kidneys. They are small and orangish in color. Surrounding them is tissue and a layer of fat. The two parts that make up an adrenal gland are the adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex.

The adrenal glands work in concert with the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland to produce several different chemicals that are essential to the healthy functioning of your body. In fact, without the adrenal glands all the tissue, glands and organs in our body would function improperly.

Your metabolic processes are dependent on the adrenal glands for regulation. This is accomplished by their maintaining the levels of blood sugar, salt and water at any given time. They are also responsible for regulating inflammation.

So far, I have listed off a bunch of important tasks that the adrenal glands accomplish. The most important task that they fulfill is to work hand in hand with the body to deal with stress of all types. Whether it is physical stress, emotional stress or psychological stress the adrenal glands handle them all. Any number of things will make you feel stressed in one way or another. Stress can come from too much pressure, being sick, working too much or not getting enough sleep. I have listed only a few things that make you feel stressed. Obviously, there are many other things that are stressful. I'm sure you can name a few.

Adrenal gland disorders are nothing to play around with. They can be life threatening and therefore must be dealt with immediately. Treatment is aimed at bringing the adrenal glands back to full health so they once again produce the correct levels of corticosteroid hormones. There are different treatments depending on the specific type of disorder that is diagnosed.

A combination of natural and conventional medicine is often the best choice for dealing with adrenal gland disorder's. Borago officinalis, astragalus membranaceous and eleutherococcus senticosis are excellent herbs for supporting the adrenal glands and the stress they have to deal with. The best thing about these herbs are there are no side effects and they are gentle on the body. If surgery is not required then it might be necessary to stay on medication for the rest of your life. Prednisone and fludrocortisone are the main prescription medications that are used to treat people with adrenal gland disorder's.

No matter how you view it our bodies cannot function properly without the adrenal glands backing them up. Be sure that you take care of yourself by eating and sleeping right. This will help to make sure you don't end up on a lifelong prescription or medication.
