Sweet tasting foods are simply irresistible, regardless of age there are many who seem to can't keep their hands off sweet foods. But like everything else that comes in excess it can also wreak havoc on one's health. It ranges from a mild stage of having teeth problems up to the life-risking condition known as obesity.

The latter condition refers to one's weight which have already exceeded their normal body mass index or BMI of up to 30. What dieters fear from this condition is the health complications that are tagged with it. Some ailments that are said to be brought about by obesity are type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart ailments.

Some weight loss aids such as those that take the pill-based forms have cited sugar to be the number one cause of obesity. But the truth of the matter is that obesity can also be developed when individuals are living a sedentary lifestyle and engage in fatty foods as well.

So what are artificial sweeteners? Also known as low-calorie sweeteners, this product is made up of chemical compounds which has been well accepted by consumers everywhere most especially those who are gearing for weight loss. It has been introduced on the market to contain very low amount of calories that would not affect the expected taste from natural sweeteners. It does not require as much volume as well to achieve the desired flavor.

Aside from dieters people with diabetic conditions highly appreciates this ingredient which enables them to enjoy sweet flavored foods and drinks without fear of increasing their blood sugar levels. But be wary that not all foods that utilizes artificial sweeteners would be healthy for the diabetics. This constitutes products that are labeled as sugar-free such as cookies, yogurt and chocolates. These foods may well contains sorbitol or mannitol that could trigger an increase on the level of sugar in the bloodstream.

There have been reports presented on the web through blogs that artificial sweeteners have caused some people to suffer from cancer. At present time, this allegation has not yet been proven through clinical studies and health - related agencies are still continuing to promote the use of such sweeteners. This may not be the case for aspartame though. Government warning have been issued that this sweetener may not be safe for people with phenylketonuria or PKU which is considered to be a rare genetic disease.

Dieters should bear in mind that consuming foods and drinks that uses artificial sweeteners are indeed low in calories but eating too much however can still result in a high level of caloric intake. Why not opt for foods that could address those sweet tooth cravings. There are a variety of fruits that are sweet in flavor which are very beneficial I promoting health. Instead of soda try to substitute it with fruit juices that you can blend together with other kinds making it more healthier. The fiber in these fruits can provide you with low calorie intake and a good aid for digestion as well. There is no fear of over consumption because one is allowed to have as much as they want.
