How to Prevent Obesity Among Children

The rate of obesity in America has been steadily increasing. If you think this is alarming, there's actually more. Even children are joining the statistics. It was reported that one out of three children are suffering from obesity.

What are the factors that resulted in such condition at a very young age? It is actually much similar on how the adults have reached this condition, it is probably in relation to genetics, a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. In case of the genetic aspect, there are some cases that children inherit their parents endocrine problems which culd result in weight gain. Children who aren't watched over, most of time they indulge in foods that are either laden with fats or sugar. Parents who have busy lifestyles have left their children at the mercy of pre-packaged foods that would only require a few minutes of heating in the oven. As for the sedentary way of life, parents feel that their children are most safe when they remain in the comforts of their own home most of the day. In this light they are gifted with toys that limits their outdoor activities such as video games and computers.

How can we know if a children is already considered as obese? Determining obesity depends in getting one's body mass index or BMI. To calculate BMI, divide weight in kg by height in meters squared; for pounds and inches, divide weight by height squared and multiply the result by the conversion factor 703.

In some situations considering the BMI may not be accurate. Remember that muscles actually weigh more than fats.

What are the consequences of obesity among children? At any age obesity is addresses not only for the aesthetic reasons but rather due to the fact that it can lead to serious illnesses such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. They could also suffer from shortness of breath whenever they engage in physical activities or sports.

Obesity among children may cause them to grow with low self-esteem that resulted from being teased and rejected by their peers. When this happens there is a tendency for children to grow up developing unhealthy eating habits and food disorders which refers to anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Start addressing the problem by seeking medical help. Bring in your children for assessment to determine what stage they are already in. They could provide helpful advice whether on altering eating habits and choices or prescriptive drugs to eliminate diseases that are tagged with obesity. They might also refer you to a dietician for a comprehensive weight management program.

But the most important step to avoid children from acquiring obesity is to watch over them. Make sure that they are being fed with healthy foods. Teach them to eat vegetables, fruits and some fiber. Try to set a good example by eating such foods together. Spending time together will not only bring you closer as a family but result in a longer and happier life.
