Dandruff can be a chronic problem for many and can be identified by either an itching scalp or skin flaking. The scalp has a lot of layers of skin cells that begin in the dermis and continue upward until they reach the top layer, which is dead cells.

Most of the dead cells cannot be seen by the human eye. Under normal circumstances, they are removed by brushing the hair and are not even noticeable. When the scalp is too dry, or has a fungus infection, the flakes get larger and can be often identified as dandruff.

Dandruff is not something that is typically diagnosed by a doctor. You should be able to tell if you have dandruff by the little white flecks of skin and the itchiness.

More serious conditions like Seborrheic dermatitis or Psoriasis are usually diagnosed by a dermatologist or the family doctor. Both of these conditions cause either yellow or silver scales and redness to occur. If you think you are experiencing something more than simple dandruff then you should talk to the doctor.

Many different things can be the cause of flaking and itchy skin. Ringworm, contact dermatitis, dry skin, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are among them. Other rare conditions that can lead to a dry scalp are: hormone fluctuations, recovering from a stroke or heart attack, not shampooing regularly or a weak immune system.

Age has a play in who gets dandruff. More often than not, it starts to show up in young adults and persists through middle age. Men are more likely to get dandruff than women. This is in part due to their sebaceous glands, which are larger and produce oil.

Dandruff is chronic but that does not mean that it cannot be controlled. There are several OTC shampoos and prescriptions that are often used to stop the flaking. Be careful because your scalp might get worse while using these or be too sensitive for the harsh chemicals that are in them.

Several herbs are available that do not have side effects and actually stop dandruff at the source. Natrium Muriaticum is a tissue salt that stops the itch and rash that dandruff can leave in its wake.

Kali. Sulph. helps by getting rid of the inflammation and disposing of the dead or infected skin cells. Trifolium Pratense is used on the exterior of the body to cleanse and improve lymph functioning. It is great for detoxifying and purifying the body system.

Make sure that the shampoo you are using is as natural as possible. Shampoos that are cheap or not natural usually cause more damage than they do good. It would be better to simply rinse the scalp with clean water than to torture it with harsh chemicals.
