Every human being is composed of numerous bacteria and microorganisms (such as bacteria, viruses, and yeasts that can be seen only under a microscope.) Some of these microscopic elements are considered to be on the good side and feed on probiotics that are found on some dietary supplements or foods. It does not necessarily mean that we have to nourish these good bacteria but the existence of such in our system can provide health benefits including those of digestion and with the improvement of one's immune system.

The World Health Organization has released a definition for probiotics saying that these are "live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host".

Probiotics are now contained in many food products such as in yogurt, some kinds of milk, some juices, tempeh and soy beverages. It is also being marketed in capsule, tablet and power forms.

Good bacteria are necessary for the enhancement of our immune system since there are numerous microorganisms that are now recently being known to induce diseases causing great havoc on one's system.

Researches have proven that probiotics are very beneficial for the female gender because it can prevent and treat vaginal yeasts infection and urinary tract infections. In general it is also good for the prevention of bladder cancer and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. For the younger age bracket, the presence of probiotics in the body can prevent skin disorder known as eczema.

Probiotics are taken in by some people to ease the symptoms of lactose intolerance or the inability of a person to ingest milk. It helps produce enzymes which are significant for digesting the amount of sugar found in milk.

There was a study done to prove the benefits of probiotics in the improvement of health. A number of people were divided into two groups. The first half were provided with the probiotic Lactobacillus Reuteri and other half with none. It was found out that people who were induced with probiotics have been less prone to absences that were due to respiratory or gastrointestinal disorders. Such research are still to be confirmed through further and in depth studies. It is recommended that one should seek medical advice before taking on probiotics for treatment of any kind which also goes for any dietary supplements dieters are eyeing on.

People who have been incorporating probiotics in their daily diet have not been seen to have any side effects although this aspect is yet to be proven through further scientific studies. If there were any cases of side effects such as bloating and gas, they have appeared to be mild and tolerable. They are also said to cause too much stimulation of the immune system as well as with the immune system.

Once you have decided to incorporate probiotics in your diet it would be best to seek medical advice first. Ask if taking in probiotics as treatment for any illnesses one may
