The skill of relaxation is critical for personal development, and it is an absolute requirement for a happy life. But how can you relax in our busy world? Here are ten techniques that you can use for quick relaxation.

1. Deep Breathing: All by itself, deep breathing can be a powerful method of getting into a deeply relaxed state. Whenever you find yourself in a relaxed state, you might notice the deep breathing starts to occur naturally. As such, it is also a very useful technique to guide yourself into a relaxed state.

2. Progressive Relaxation: Moving back and forth between light tension and ever deepening relaxation allows you to reach an incredible level of relaxation very quickly. This is also much easier to do if you are trying to relax from an agitated state.

3. Visualization: Just letting your imagination flow can be a powerful way to relax. You can also imagine specific scenes that are relaxing for you. Beaches, massage, wine in front of a fireplace... (or beer in front of a space heater... whatever works for you). Visualize doing activities that bring you into a deep space of relaxation... and as you picture them in your mind's eye... you will find yourself getting more and more relaxed.

4. Countdown: Count down from 10 to 1, 20 to 1, or 100 to 1. Many people use this as a method of inducing sleep as well. This has a very natural, soothing effect. You might notice that as you count down your shoulders drop lower and lower... and you feel your body become more and more settled... as you descend deeper and deeper into incredibly peaceful relaxation.

5. Notice Tension, then let it go: This is simply the act of changing your mind-body by using your focus. When you notice where the tension is specifically, it is usually much easier to let it go, and move into a place of deep relaxation. The head, face, and shoulders are always a good place to notice and release tension.

6. Pleasant Music: Music is one of the fastest methods of relaxation in common use. Find a peaceful slow song that you like. Soft rock, jazz, bluegrass, R&B, and wide range of other types of music all have songs/artists/albums that can be very beneficial for fast relaxation. Find what works best for you. And of course, listening to music hardly seems like a technique... it's just something you do for fun.

7. Brainwave Entrainment: Brainwave entrainment is also a great technique for quick relaxation. If you have some brainwave entrainment tracks... I encourage you to use them frequently. They will help you relax in the moment, and they are also very helpful in building a momentum of relaxation in your life.

8. Light Exercise/Go for a walk: This is classic advice for relaxation... but that is because it works. Going for a walk is probably the most common form... but any light exercise can work. When you get your body moving, it gives you a chance to really bring your awareness into the physical body... once you notice what's going on in your body... relaxation becomes that much easier.

9. Complete Acceptance: This is challenging! It is, however, probably the most powerful technique for quick, deep relaxation. When you have complete acceptance of a situation (particularly a challenging one), it is a simple matter to let go of tension in the body.

10. Combination: This is my favorite. I learned a long time ago, that stacking techniques is a powerful way to get an even deeper effect. Before you can attempt this, though, you must become really comfortable with two or more basic relaxation techniques.

Remember, These techniques are only useful if you use them. As you practice the skill of relaxation, you will get better and better, and relaxation will gradually become the natural background rhythm of your life!
