It's clear that liposuction is popular in America. Hundreds of thousands of people undergo the procedure every year. Financing options make the surgery available even for people who wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford it.

With this increase in the popularity and commonality of liposuction (also called lipectomy or lipoplasty), it is important that people know enough about the procedure to be able to be well prepared for it. Better preparations lead to better surgeries, which lead to better results and happier people.

The first, and quite possibly most important, stage of preparation is educational. The most important factor that will help people to wisely be able to decide whether or not to undergo a lipectomy is knowledge. Potential patients should do research on the general facts of liposuction: "What is it?" "How is it performed?" "How much does it cost?" "What are some of the common side effects or complications?" "How long does it take to recover?" "What sorts of benefits can be expected?"

Patients should also do research to find out about the large variety of available surgical methods. There are a lot of different techniques that surgeons use to remove fat during a lipectomy, and each of them has different strengths and weaknesses. Just some of the techniques that patients can choose between are the tumescent method, laser lipolysis, ultrasound assisted liposuction, the water jet method and custom acoustic liposuction.

If patients can do research and know some about these different techniques, they may be able to find one that would fit their own unique needs.

Patients should similarly do research on the doctors in their area. By comparing patient reviews and before and after pictures, potential patients can begin to get an assessment of which surgeons they may want to steer clear of and which ones they want to investigate more fully.

The next level of research will involve visiting the doctors that you are interested in. Many surgeons offer free consultations to interested potential clients. This can be a great resource for learning more about the procedure, about the surgeon and about whether or not liposuction would be a good match with your goals. When you speak with your surgeon, you can share any questions or concerns that your research has sparked.

As you speak with the doctor and express clearly your goals and fears, he or she should be able to help you to know if what you want is realistic and probable.

As you continue to prepare for your liposuction, there will be a lot of preparation to do. However, knowing what you're getting yourself into will help you out amazingly. It will help you to be more satisfied and assured as you make all of the choices regarding your liposuction, including whether or not it's right for you.
