Illness and injuries are a part of life and it is something that everyone has to deal with in their life. Throughout your lifetime, you will experience a multitude on injuries ranging from sprained ankles to broken legs and concussions.

Most of theses injuries will not require anything more than some good old-fashioned rest and relaxation. However, many people will seek the use of over-the-counter medication when medication is not needed or required. This unnecessary use of over-the-counter medication can lead to medication of injuries.

Definition of Drug Abuse
When I talk about medication injuries, I am not talking about drug abuse. Drug abuse is a completely different story. Drug abuse is when someone seeks out either prescription or non-prescription medication to produce pleasure, to alleviate stress, or to alter one's state of consciousness.

Definition of Over-the-Counter Medication Injuries
Over-the-counter medication injuries are completely accidental, and they are not the result of drug abuse. Medication injuries have to do with the medicine that you are using to treat a condition having a side effect that is harmful to you.

Causes of Medication Injury
Medication injuries can occur from accidentally ingesting too much of a medication or taking the medication too frequently. This often occurs when a patient needs to see a doctor and does not.

Other times, medication injuries occur when a person mixes different medications. For example, a person taking a prescription blood thinner should not take over-the-counter aspirin and diabetic should not take NSAIDs. Children with chicken pox should not take aspirin and the list goes on and on.

Preventing Medication Injury
Follow Dosing Instructions
Always follow the dosing instructions on all over-the-counter medications. It is very important never to go over the recommended amount for your age and weight. If you need more than the recommended amount, seek the advice of your doctor or chiropractor.

Maintain Good Nutrition
Maintaining a balanced diet will keep you in a healthy state to fight off infection and prevent injury. When your body has correct nutrition, you naturally produce endorphins that act as a pain reliever, and you will not need as much over-the-counter medications. You may wish to seek the advice of a nutritionist to make sure your body is on the right track.

Maintain Good Posture
Your entire body works through your spinal cord without it, nothing works. When your posture is good, your spine can absorb nutrition for a healthy body. The slightest compression can cause pain and weakness making healing harder. You may wish to seek the advice of a chiropractor to make sure your spine is in proper alignment.

Maintain Proper Weight
Maintaining the proper body fat ratio is important to a healthy lifestyle. Eight out of ten Americans are overweight. This causes people to increase medication, which in turn increases their risk for an accidental medication injury. For many overweight Americans, simply losing weight will significantly reduce their risk of an accidental over-the-counter medication injury.

If you are having problems controlling your weight, you may wish to seek help from the professional at in nutrition and chiropractics. They have a staff that can work with you for both weight loss and weight maintenance.
