If you are planning on trying to stop smoking, you might want to be prepared for surprising yourself. You really could turn into Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde when you decide to give up smoking. You might have the nicest, sweetest nature in the world when you are smoking, but take away your cigarettes and you could become intolerable to live with. You might become sulky, depressed and ill humored to say the least! If it is at all possible, keep your distance from those you love as much as you can because you do not want to take your anxiety and discomfort out on them.

Days before you decide you give up the cigarettes, make yourself a game plan. Whether you are going to quit cold turkey or use a step down process, you are going to run into some tough times more than likely. It is a very rare person that can give up smoking tobacco without any problems at all. You will have many times a day when you are going to be tempted to smoke and it is just might take everything in you to overcome it and sometimes you might not be able to. Just let yourself go with the flow, sort of. You do have to keep your goal in mind at all times or chances are that you will slip right back into your smoking habit like a comfortable glove.

Never give up when you have a smoke or have more than you are supposed to. Just regroup your resolve and start again. If you find yourself getting ill with loved ones or feeling really depressed, this is where your game plan comes in. Have a list of things to do ready to use when the tough times come along. It might be things that need doing around the house. It could be activities you want to do with your kids. It might be going to visit an old friend. You can put anything on your list that you think might be a way to distract you from wanting a cigarette for just one more hour.

Quitting smoking is an hour by hour process especially in the beginning. Then, eventually you can work your way into a day by day, week by week process. After you get that first smoke free week under your belt, you should get a boost of confidence that you can really do this. If you can go without smoking for a whole week and have not injured or alienated anyone in your household, you could very well be on the road to a smoke-free life and recovery!
