Statistics show that more than half of the American adult population are suffering from excess weight or obesity. What is more alarming is that the younger generation also partakes some percentage of their own. In this day and age, more and more people are becoming aware of how grave this condition can be with making type II diabetes, high-blood pressure and heart-related ailments a distinct possibility.

Most weight loss aids have always considered that obesity and weight gain is a result of sedentary way of life and unhealthy food choices. These are considered facts and science has added another aspect to the list, bacteria.
Our body particularly the digestive tract is naturally composed of millions and millions of bacteria. And lately they have been found to be another reason behind weight gain or weight loss. Intestinal bacteria is responsible for the extraction of calories and nutrients from the food that we eat.

One research performed at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have observed that regardless of what kind of diet was given to their obese participants weight loss and its maintenance has been dependent on the bacterial population in their digestive tract. This also explains why some people have difficulty in losing weight even with the aid of exercise while some go through with it easily.

There are two particular type of bacteria that are said to trigger the possibility of weight gain, firmicutes and bacteriodetes. A great population of firmicutes have greater potential of gaining weight and it is the same case when one has a lower count of bacteriodetes. It has also been observed that when a dieter starts to lose weight the number of bacteria changes wherein bacteriodetes in the reigning and firmicutes subsiding.

Such results have lead Dr. Jeffrey Gordon to state that "...differences in our gut microbial ecology may determine how many calories we are able to extract and absorb from our diet and deposit in our fat cells." Imagine, if they could finally find the means to increase the production of bacteriodetes on our digestive system then weight loss possibility would be a breeze. Hence, the potency of our digestive tract to absorb the necessary nutrients and calories depends on this microorganisms.

These researches are indeed fresh but it can be a beginning of a great path towards effective and natural weight loss. Any which way, dieters should never forget the practice of eating the right kinds of foods and exercising regularly. These traditional methods have been proven for the longest time to be the most potent and safe means to achieve weight loss. The right kinds of foods refer to the daily consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber.

In addition, fiber which is an indigestible part of the plant that also plays a major part in the feeding good bacteria found on our digestive tract. That is why the daily recommended amount for every American adults are 20 – 35 grams.
