Most people will experience some neck pain during their lives. Acute pain may last for a few hours or weeks, whereas chronic pain lasts for several months or more. Generally the causes of neck pain are minor; poor posture or an awkward sleeping position may generate the problem.

Some causes of pain are more serious. A good assessment of the seriousness of your neck pain is to try and touch your chin to your chest. If you can't manage that without severe pain after a few days of self-treatment, it is time to see the doctor.

Diagnosis and Treatment Basics of Neck Pain
The symptoms of neck pain can be different from individual to individual but some generalities can be drawn. Pain and stiffness in the neck, discomfort extending down to the shoulders and upper back, and difficulty with daily activities are commonly found in those complaining of neck pain.

The most common source of neck pain is a simple strain from overexertion. The body is simply not designed to spend many hours hunched over a computer monitor, driving, or focused on small things. As the muscles become overused, a strain develops. This type of neck pain is easily addressed with postural changes, icing and anti-inflammatory medication.

Aging joints and disks also lead to neck pain. These conditions, while also common, are more complicated to treat. Osteoarthritis is often a cause of neck pain for older patients, and the best treatment is physical therapy, movement therapies, and over the counter medications.

Disk issues can cause nerve problems if the bulges and herniations press against nerve roots in the neck. Numbness or tingling is a clear sign of nerve impingement. Still, movement therapies, physical therapy, medications and more will be tried before surgery is even considered.

Whiplash
Whiplash is a specific type of neck injury caused by the rapid whipping of the neck forward and back usually during a motor vehicle accident. This rapid movement can cause tears and sprains in the neck muscle, most especially in the anterior neck muscles that are difficult to reach and treat.

Ranging in severity from mild to severe, whiplash injuries can plague people for years. Symptoms can include dizziness, neck pain, confusion, headaches, memory problems and more. It can take hours, days, or even weeks for the symptoms to fully present, making it a bit more difficult to pinpoint the source.

When to Seek Medical Advice for Neck Problems
If you have neck pain that lasts for more than a few days, causes numbness or tingling in either arm, or it becomes difficult and painful to move your head, you must see a physician. Most neck pain is treated successfully.

Research into neck pain indicated that for those that experience long term neck pain general exercise helps reduce the impact. Exercise and treatment also decreases lost workdays and productivity.

While minor neck pain goes away quickly and is easily self treated, serious neck problems should be properly assessed and treated. Your general practitioner, chiropractor or massage therapist can help you manage pain and heal.
