Braces of all kinds provide a means of straightening teeth. Care for braces and teeth can be something of a challenge, though. With so many brackets, wires, and bands to work around, brushing and flossing tooth surfaces is difficult because of these obstructions these structures create.

There are dozens of hard-to-reach places that are created beneath and around dental braces. Care must be taken in finding and removing food particles and plaque that accumulate in these areas.

If proper hygiene is not adhered to, and plaque and bacteria are allowed to form, permanent stains, tooth decay, and gum disease will be the inevitable results. While your teeth will be beautifully aligned after your braces are removed, you will have new dental conditions to address which could scar those teeth and cost you a great deal of money.

There are some basic things you can do to prevent this. Dental braces care is not that difficult when you learn a few basic techniques that will help you with the process.

1. You need to floss your teeth at least once a day using a floss threader. This tool has a loop at one end into which you insert the floss. To use it, insert the floss threader between the wires and your teeth. Then, remove the threader and pull the floss into a shape around the side of your tooth. Then, floss up and down the sides of each tooth.

2. You need to double check to see if you missed any areas. Make sure you rinse with plenty of water.

3. Dental braces care also involves using fluoride toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush. We recommend that you use a toothbrush with a small head.

4. We recommend that you brush your teeth every morning when you get up, after every meal, and every night before you go to bed. You need to pay extra attention to areas where brackets and bands meet the tooth. You also need to pay close attention to the areas where the tooth meets the gumline.

5. When you are away from home, take a travel toothbrush with you with the same features as the one you use at home. This way your dental braces care will remain consistent and independent of hotel toothbrushes that may not work as well, or that may even damage your gums.

6. When you brush your teeth and braces, you need to angle the brush toward your gums. Make sure to go over each and every tooth with small, circular motions. Make sure you get between the wires of your braces as much as possible. Use the bristles to brush over and around the brackets as much as you can.

7. Remember to gently brush your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth.

Do not forget the importance of professional dental services, no matter how diligent your home care program becomes. See a dentist every six months for professional teeth cleaning services and a complete dental examination. This is essential to keeping your mouth free of cavities and plaque.
