Bruxism or the grinding of teeth while sleeping is a disorder that can be disturbing to the people around you. Most people who experience this disorder may not know that they are grinding their teeth but this can be disturbing to your spouse or your roommate, or anyone who shares your bedroom.

Although bruxism most often occurs during sleep, it can also occur in daytime for some. It can also be disturbing if you find your children experiencing bruxism as well. This disorder most often affects children and it may alarm you to find out that your child is clenching or grinding his teeth while sleeping.

Aside from being disturbing, the habit of grinding and clenching your teeth during sleep can also cause teeth problems and can also lead to headaches and pain after waking up. Severe cases may also cause jaw problems thus, it is just right to find ways on how to stop grinding teeth while sleeping.

In finding ways on how to stop grinding teeth while sleeping, it is important to understand first the causes of this habit. Although the exact causes have not yet been specifically determined, there are possible causes that are associated with teeth grinding. Stress and anxiety are among them. This disorder is also seen to be common to individuals who are aggressive and hyperactive, as well as those full of frustrations and reserved emotions or anger.

Aside from these psychological factors, the physical causes of bruxism also include, misaligned teeth or some bite problems. It can also be a side effect to certain medications. In the case of children, the growing teeth and jaws may also lead to teeth grinding at night.

The ways on how to stop grinding teeth while sleeping depend largely on what causes your bruxism. If your case if found to be due to stress and anxiety, you may want to learn some techniques to help you relax and manage stress in your life. Meditation, deep breathing and yoga exercises are good techniques to help you manage stress and avoid teeth grinding in the future.

Psychotherapy, biofeedback, as well as counseling can help a lot in overcoming stress in life and may help you overcome teeth grinding as well.

If you are suffering from severe teeth grinding because of some malocclusion or dental problems, you may want to visit your dentist for some solutions to correct tooth alignment. A mouth guard or splints may be recommended. Crowns or overlays may also be suggested especially when your teeth grinding has caused your teeth to be more sensitive.

If medication is what causes your teeth grinding, your doctor may switch your prescription to lessen the symptoms of bruxism. Although teeth grinding is not something that may cause you to be alarmed, it is however recommended to visit your doctor especially if it has caused damage on your teeth or if you notice some loosening of your teeth because of this habit.

Although teeth grinding in children will most often disappear as they grow, it is important to seek treatment though if it poses damage to their teeth or may cause pain in their jaws.
