Philadelphia laser hair removal experts advise their clients on what steps they need to take to improve the percentage of success. These preparations improve the hair removal and reduce the chance of negative side effects.

Get Rid of Your Tan

The ideal laser hair removal patient has dark hair and pale skin. The laser is able to treat the hair without damaging the underlying tissue. Patients should make their skin as pale as possible for great results.

If you have a tan, it could take a month or longer for it to go away. During this time stay out of the sun and tanning booths. Even sunless tanning products should be avoided. Avoiding the sun has the benefit that if your hair is sun-bleached, new hair growth will be darker and more susceptible to laser hair removal.

Take Care of Your Skin

Starting at least a few days before the treatment, avoid any products that make the skin sensitive to sunlight. When tissues are susceptible to sun damage, they are also more likely to be harmed by laser hair removal. Products to avoid include Retin-A and many acne treatments. Before discontinuing any prescription skin products, discuss the situation with your doctor to be sure you can stop the product safely.

On the day of the treatment, wash the area with soap and water but put no other skin products on. Products to avoid include lotions, creams and deodorants. Any skin product can interfere with the laser and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Clean, dry skin provides the best surface for the treatment.

Prepare the Hair

At least 3 weeks before treatment discontinue any waxing, plucking, electrolysis, depilatories or other hair removal treatments. These techniques remove the hair from the follicle and prevent the laser from being able to act on the root of the hair. Shaving is acceptable up until 2-3 days before the treatment. Most offices need visible stubble so they know where to direct the laser.

Stop bleaching hair in the treatments about 3 weeks before the treatment. The laser more easily targets darker hair and patients will have a more successful procedure if the hair is unbleached. As new hair grows it will be dark at the root, which is where the laser is targeted.

Talk to the Philadelphia laser hair removal clinic you have chosen to see if there are any other preparations you should take. Your cooperation with the doctor will increase your chances of a successful treatment.
