If you've ever been on a diet, then it's most likely you have either been on or heard about unhealthy fad diets. Years ago, these diets were so popular. They promised so much hope for people trying to lose weight. In this article we will examine why are fad diets not good for you.
Why do fad diets illustrate doom for those that follow them? Here are a few ideas that have been found throughout years of testing.
-Lack of Exercise-
If you'll notice these plans rarely talk about exercise. To truly live a healthy and fit lifestyle, it's imperative that you increase your activity levels. Among other things, exercise increases your physical and mental health as well as increases your metabolism, which is exactly what you want if losing weight is your goal.
-Real Issue Ignored-
When losing weight with fad diets, often times the reason why you are gaining weight in the first place is ignored. They only mask the problem for a short time; it does not correct underlying issues. The reason why you are gaining weight could be due to a slow thyroid, illness, medication, stress, etc.
-Side Effects-
There are many side effects that come with these diets. Dieters have experienced health issues such as dehydration, headaches, loss of energy, and digestive problems. More serious complications have also occurred such as kidney, liver, cardiac issues and even death.
-Food Deprivation-
Important foods such as carbohydrates, fats, fruits, and certain vegetables are cut out. Depleting the body of important nutrients it needs to maintain a healthy immune system and function properly can be lethal.
-Reduced Metabolism-
Restricted calorie counts that are usually associated with strict harmful diets push the body into starvation mode. As the body thinks it is being starved, it holds on to all foods and stores it as fat from fear that it won't know when it will be fed properly again. This process reduces the body's metabolism because as the food is being depleted and more fat is stored, the metabolism inevitably slows down. When you start eating normal gain, you will notice that you put the weight right back on.
-Boredom-
One of the reasons why these crazy diets do not last is because they require the dieter to eat the same foods day after day. After a few weeks of being on a strict diet that does not allow you to deter or eat other products, it's only natural that you will slowly go off the program by starting to incorporate your own foods. As soon as you start adding in other foods, you'll see the weight quickly pack on.
There are sometimes useful applications for a fad diet. Maybe you just need to lose a quick 10 pounds for a special event. In that case it could be ok to use a quick fad diet. BUT if your goal is long term healthy weight loss stick to a diet that will teach you to eat better and lose weight long term.
