Gout can be painful and along with the pain, you may have to endure the swelling, the redness of your toes or your ankles or your knees that can last for a few days or several weeks before it subsides. Gout is a type of arthritis and it may be a very painful one, thus finding treatments for gout as early as possible can save you a lot from this disease.

Gout happens when there is high level of uric acid in the blood that may become crystals in the joints of the body, causing the pain, the swelling and the redness.

You can also avoid putting more weight on your painful joint by freeing it from blankets or any clothing that can add more weight on it and worsening the swelling.

- Applying ice pack on the affected area can be helpful in easing up the pain and reduce swelling.

- Drink plenty of water. Keeping yourself hydrated will help a lot in diluting uric acid in your blood and your urine and thus preventing future gout attacks.

- Avoid foods high in purine. These include dried peas, dried beans and other legumes, shellfish, mushrooms, fishes such as sardines, anchovies, herring and mackerel. You also have to avoid organ meats such as liver and kidney.

- Avoid alcohol. If you are having gout attacks, it will help a lot to avoid alcohol totally. Alcohol can block the discharge of uric acid in your body and thus can contribute to your gout. Taking alcohol along with high risk foods will increase your chances of gout attacks too.

- Take cherry juice. Cherries are popular natural remedy for gout as they help lower down the levels of uric acid. It is believed that the compound anthocyanins in cherry juice help in lowering down blood urates. Although cherry juice may be one of the popular natural treatments for gout, its effects on different people may vary as well. Others may find relief with cherries in a few days, but others may however need a number of weeks before finding results.

- A change in your diet is one important step that you can do to free yourself from gout as well as get rid of gout attacks. Aside from avoiding foods that are high in purine, you can also prevent gout by switching to a healthier diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and foods high in vitamin C.
