Alcohol breath tests are the easiest method of ascertaining the Blood Alcohol Content of a person. This basically will tell one how drunk someone is by measuring the amount of alcohol that is expelled from the air that is breathed out. This is a legal requirement for some professions like in commercial airline pilots and people who are in jobs that require complete concentration. It is also a mandate by law that people have only a certain amount of alcohol in their blood while driving. In some countries, this is extended to a zero tolerance level, where any amount of alcohol found in the blood is enough to put one behind bars.

Blood alcohol content and Breath Alcohol Content is not identical. The Breath Alcohol Content test that is administered using a breathalyzer measures the amount of alcohol that is expelled in the breath and then makes an indicative reading of the Blood Alcohol Content. The actual Blood Alcohol Content test is done in a laboratory and is measured by taking a blood sample. The body cannot tolerate very high levels of alcohol and the range of blood alcohol level between being uninhibited and talkative and being in a state close to death is very small. The base BAC levels start from 0.01% to 0.029% that would indicate normalcy to 0.03% to 0.059% that would impair judgment and conservative behavior. There are few more stages that are set before the final blood alcohol level of 0.4% or more that is supposed to be enough to cause death. These reference ranges are not absolute and seasoned drinkers who have high concentrations of fat in their bodies metabolize alcohol in a completely different way so that a high BAC does not necessarily mean drunken stupor.

Blood alcohol levels are different for different countries with countries like Romania, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Brazil, and Bangladesh being countries where any amount of alcohol in the blood is considered a crime. The norms climb higher for other countries with the highest allowable category being 0.08%. The United States falls into this last category. 0.08% is the stage at which a novice drinker would experience impaired reflexes, peripheral vision, recovering from glare, reasoning, and other skills. Alcohol Breath Tests are essential in curbing and preventing drink driving. Drink driving is one of the primary factors for accidents and puts the driver as well as others at risk. Alcohol Breath Tests can be taken on the spot which means that an officer can test an individual then and there in a minimal amount of time. The immediate results will dictate the course of action required. Alcohol Breath Tests have been responsible for a drastic drop in the number of teenage drink driving cases.
