The practice of a nurse practitioner can be different from community to community. In some states they will be able to work independently. Other communities, however, require them to be teamed up with a doctor who is licensed.
The work they do with a patient is very much like the work a physician would do. The diagnosis, course of treatment and management of the treatment is all administered by the nurse practitioner. Additionally they can prescribe medications or other therapies that might be needed. Most nurses working in the field are not able to do any of this.
Nurse practitioners enjoy a career that is more independent, and many have a practice of their own. But with more freedom comes more responsibility. They are responsible for everything from diagnosis to treatment, much like an attending physician would be.
