There is a huge emphasis in our culture about the necessity to conform to the virtually unreachable standards of the "perfect body." But when you are trying to be happy and healthy, these expectations are absolutely unrealistic--so just let them go!

Focus on having a vigorous exercise routine and fulfilling your nutritional needs. Once you reach your optimum weight (which should be determined through working closely with your doctor), the difficulty comes through maintaining it. Allow me to offer a few tips.

To start with, you may want to consider weighing yourself daily, or at least weekly. This is not meant to discourage you in any way; in fact, it should do just the opposite. It will allow you to see how you are doing and help you to know if you need to correct any behaviors as your week progresses.

Next, you will want to control water weight. This can be a problem for women in particular. Avoid excessive amounts of sodium in your diet, especially when you are approaching your menstrual period.

When you feel the need to indulge cravings, be sure to do so in moderation. Allow yourself a specified amount of whatever you crave so that you don't overdo it.

Also, be sure to also pay close attention to serving sizes whenever you are snacking, even if it's on something considered "healthy." After all, you CAN have too much of a good thing!

If you have found success in the past through tracking calories, you may want to find software or a free internet program that makes this process more convenient.

Along the same lines, you should thing about keeping a daily journal to help you track your habits. Some people feel disciplined by the sense of accountability that comes with having to "report," to your journal each day. Find a nice durable leather journal to help you track your progress over the following months and even years to come.

Continue to exercise. If it has gotten old to go to the gym or jump on your treadmill, then explore new activities to work exercise naturally into your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator; park a little further from entrances. When you clean house, turn on energizing music and try to make it a cardio routine. Have fun and spice up your workouts!

When you started your diet, you tried to cut down junk food and fast food. Keep it up! Pack your lunches for work instead of running to a cafe or going through a drive-thru. That doesn't mean you cannot indulge every once in awhile, but keeping your good habits established is a major key to success.

Maintaining your healthy weight can be a lifelong effort, but it doesn't have to be an uphill battle. Just find what works best for you. Whenever you slip up a little bit, just get right back on the path.
