How many times have you promised yourself that you are going to get in shape? Maybe you bought a gym membership, shopped for new workout close, or even purchased a book or two about how to lose weight while building strength. You may have even gone to the gym regularly, weighing in and taking measurements for the first little while, only to find yourself fall entirely out of the habit. I think the longest I have gone is six months straight on a program, and while I saw some results, they weren't as dramatic as I had hoped.

Why don't we stick to it? In talking to some fitness trainers, I have found that most people throw in the towel because they really don't know what they are doing. They try to push themselves too hard too fast, and end up injured, or they don't have reasonable expectations for their own success. Many times, they aren't optimizing their workouts.

They use the same exercises for months on end without doing the little things necessary to isolate muscle groups and get the most impact in their target area. They end up tired and disappointed, either because the weight didn't come off or because they weren't able to progress in measurements or in strength in the way they had planned.

So how do we find the right program and the right accountability to make a difference for ourselves? There are a lot of resources on the web, at bookstores, and at the gym, but not all of these are created equal. When evaluating a program, consider if the examples they use seem realistic. We've all seen the miraculous before and after photos, but are those the exception or the rule of this particular program? Also, is diet a consideration, and is the diet something you can live with? Does it require dietary supplementation, and is it within your discipline and price range to use those supplements consistently?

One great key to a successful program is finding a personal trainer. With the program you are considering, will there be someone educated in body fitness who can coach you and answer your questions? With today's technology, some of that coaching can be net-based. Video clips can be downloaded and reviewed, progress reports can be emailed and critiqued, and support groups and forums can offer tips and encouragement. Just the same, finding a good coach who will work with you on a regular basis may be what you actually need to get the body and health that you desire.

So when considering a program, look for one that seems realistic, provides all types of guidance, and hopefully one with coaches, either or both virtual and personal. You'll then have a program that can lead you to success.
