Most women undergo intermittent and unexplainable bouts of abdominal cramps during pregnancy. Although this may be a little unnerving, most women get used to the slight twinges within the first few months. While slight cramps is not unusual, severe cramping in the lower abdomen during pregnancy may sometimes hint at a more severe medical condition. Hence it is important that you consult your health professional or primary care provider at the first signs of any abdominal cramps in the lower abdomen during pregnancy.

One situation that calls for immediate medical attention is experiencing abdominal cramps during the first few weeks of pregnancy. This is likely to point out to an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition that sometimes takes place during early pregnancy. In an ectopic pregnancy the fertilized egg forms outside the woman's uterus. Under normal situations, the pregnant woman's egg attaches to the female internal reproductive organ. If an ectopic pregnancy goes unnoticed it could lead to a severance of the female internal reproductive organ also known as the fallopian tubes. If you are unsure as to whether you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy or not, contact your gynecologist right away.

Other causes of abdominal cramps during pregnancy that require emergency medical treatment include:
* Stomach flu or gastroenteritis

* Pain caused due to the consumption of poisonous or contaminated food

* Inflammation of the vermiform appendix

* An infection of any of the organs of the urinary tract

* Disorder affecting the kidneys

* Abnormal state of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, urine retention and presence of excessive protein in the urine

If the abdominal cramps is followed by other indications such as shivering, rise in the temperature of the body, blood spotting or abnormal bleeding, it may be a sign warranting immediate medical condition and hence you must get in touch with your gynecologist straightaway for a correct diagnosis of your abdominal cramping.

Another reason for abdominal pain dung pregnancy could be miscarriage or spontaneous abortion. At times lower abdominal cramping during pregnancy could also be an indication of an impending stillbirth. Other symptoms of miscarriage accompanying abdominal pain during pregnancy may include light or heavy bleeding with cramping similar to menstruation that may increase in a gradual manner in degree along with lower back pain. Another condition associated with abdominal pain during pregnancy, which is an emergency situation is the onset of preterm labor. During the latter stages of pregnancy, some women experience lower abdominal cramping. The normal reason for this could be the stretching of the uterus, but in some cases, it could also indicate premature labor.
