Yoga is an age old practice that concentrates on a person's mental, physical, and spiritual health. The wonderful feature about yoga is that the practice is always changing and evolving so the routine never becomes mundane and monotonous. Within the practice of yoga, there are a number of different styles. One such style is Hatha Yoga.

Introduced by a 15th century yogic sage from India by the name of Yogi Swatmarama, Hatha Yoga is a style of yoga that emphasizes the health of the body through postures and breathing practices. This type concentrates on cleansing of the body which results in a purification of the mind. It works to bring balance between body and mind. The objective of this style is to prepare the body for meditation or relaxation.

Hatha Yoga has many benefits that include: promoting a healthy body and mind, allowing one to channel energy positively, and relieving stress. It can be modified to meet a particular person's needs, low impact so it will not negatively stress the muscles and heart, and improves one's sleep patterns allowing them to wake up refreshed, rejuvenated, alert, and focused. There are approximately two hundred Hatha Yoga postures with hundreds of variations. Each pose is designed to improve strength, balance, flexibility, spinal health, and circulation of the internal organs and tissues. Hatha Yoga can also help one relieve tension, anxiety, and manage depression. As well, this style consists of a number of moral teachings that includes principles of honesty and nonviolence.

The two key features of Hatha Yoga are the postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama). The asanas are applied to tone, stretch, and strengthen the body. One will hold a number of different poses for a specific period of time. Pranayama, or breathwork, concentrates on breath control and promotes an inward focus to improve one's spirituality. Its postures include: Back Bending Poses, Advanced Poses, Yoga for Abdominals, Supine Poses, Gentle Poses, Twisting Poses, Yoga for Back, Restorative Poses, Forward Bending Poses, Standing Poses, Yoga for Legs and Glutes, Balance Poses, and Sitting Poses.

A Hatha Yoga routine will consist of stretching poses that is low impact, breathing exercises, and sometimes meditation. It is a great type of yoga for people who are just starting to learn about the practice. Many people who try this type of yoga enjoy the slow pace and relaxed techniques. Once they become familiar with Hatha Yoga, they will move on to a more high impact style of yoga.

Hatha Yoga helps one put their mind in a state of focus to prepare for meditation and ultimately look inwards to achieve a state of enlightenment. Although the practice of meditation is considered to be an important element of Hatha Yoga, not all yoga instructors will involve meditation as part of their routine. The practice of Hatha Yoga is a healthy and relaxing way to promote serenity and improve one's physical and mental health.
