Millions of people wear regular or soft contacts which need thorough cleaning to ensure that they do not suffer from an eye infection. It is very important to make sure that you wash your lenses properly so that you promote good health and reduce all infections contact lens wearers suffer from. Here in this article we shall look at how to clean your particular type of lenses to ensure that your eyes are healthy.

Soft contacts are more likely than hard ones to absorb pollution in the air and in the environment such as smoke, sprays, fumes and other substances. By cleaning your lenses daily this will help remove all of the build up that occurs and stop any eye irritation. It is recommended that every time you remove your soft lenses that you clean them and that you purchase good quality cleaners that are designed specifically for your type.

The basic steps are very simple, before touching your contacts always clean your hands. There is no point touching your clean lenses with all the germs on your hands, they will only transfer to your lenses. Remove one of your contacts gently and place into the centre of your hand, before adding cleaning solution to the outer surfaces of the lens. Then with one of your fingers from the other hand rub the cleaning solution into the lens for a minute.

Then rinse your contact with the cleaning solution and place into the lens case, fill your lens case with cleaning solution before starting on the other contact. Some other soft contacts need a bit more cleaning than just this process; this is a heated cleaning process and is available at the opticians. Make sure you ask your optician which cleaning process your lenses require so that your lenses are as clean as possible.

For hard contact lenses they need to be cleaned and disinfected every time they are worn, but they too have specific contact lens solutions. But all the types of hard lenses will have different solutions to clean them and will dictate the frequency in which you need to. The actually cleaning process is very similar to soft lenses but after rubbing in the solution into the surface of the contacts the lens will need to be rinsed with cold water.

People find that when cleaning lenses it is a good idea to always start with the same contact lens (such as the left) so that you never get the two confused. With any enquiries or concerns about your lenses you should always consult your optician for advice.
