If you decide that you would like to try and buy contacts then you need to start by consulting a professional eye care practitioner for a fitting. Only registered optometrists, dispensing opticians with a specialist qualification and medical practitioners can fit contact lenses. A fitting will include discussing your visual and lifestyle requirements and working out whether contacts will suit both of these. You will also undergo an eye examination to see if your eyes are healthy and how to look after your contact lenses as well as putting them in.

After that your optician will be able to give you all your details known as a contact lens specification, which is what you need in order to buy contacts. An in-date specification will be needed when you buy contacts from a supplier, if a supplier does not ask or verify the specification with your practitioner then you should not be purchasing contacts from them. Not all online suppliers verify this information so do check that this is part of their policy; it is in the interest of your eye's health.

The specification that your practitioner should give you, in order to buy contacts should include all the information you would need to buy new lenses. It will need to include the lens measurements, power, and material, brand and expiry date. It should also additionally have the date you are next due to have a contact lens check up. Other details that are required are a GOC registration number and your practitioners address.

If you want to buy contacts that do not correct your eyesight but rather change the colour then you are not legally required to have a fitting. But it is recommended that you still do, as it is within your eye sights best interests. These lenses still require the same amount of care when buying and wearing these lenses as any others. You will need to understand care instructions so that you can clean your lenses in the correct solutions.

Finally, of you are under the age of sixteen then you can only buy contacts under the direct supervision of a registered optometrist, dispensing optician or medical practitioner. These same restrictions are also applied to people that are registered as blind or partially sighted. With any medical concern, please always refer to your optician for advice about wearing contact lenses, taking care of them and buying contacts from other suppliers.
