It wasn't long ago that I saw a television commercial for a facial cleanser that was for women that had gotten over acne but did not need treatment for wrinkles. As a woman in my mid-twenties, I couldn't help but wonder (with a glance in the mirror) if there were any such women.
I began noticing fine lines forming in my skin by the time I turned twenty. As the skin ages, these problems do not get better on their own. Wrinkles are generally caused by the breakdown of collagen, which does not regenerate easily, and this makes the skin more vulnerable to tearing and bruising.
Companies that sell over-the-counter anti-aging treatments have become very conscious of the average woman's hesitancy to seek more "drastic," measures, such as injections or even cosmetic surgery.
But you should know that only YOU can decide what is right for you, ideally with help from a dermatologist that specializes in over 40 skin care. You shouldn't worry about pressure to go "under the knife," or to remain "au natural."
With all that being said, in order to determine the best approach to your aging skin, you should make a thorough list of problem areas or particular qualities that are worrisome or frustrating.
Do you still have problems with blackheads or other forms of acne? Are there signs of sun damage, age spots, or scarring? What about sagging and wrinkles? Make thorough notes about these concerns and take them with you if and when you decide to chat with a professional.
In the meantime, be sure to do plenty of research. Many women believe that Botox injections are the "quick fix," to frown lines and other wrinkles, but that joke about a woman's face freezing can actually be true. Botox works through temporarily paralyzing facial muscles because, in most cases, if the muscles can't flex, the wrinkles can't form.
Instead of looking for the miracle cure, spend time taking good care of your skin right now to prevent further damage. You can do this with seemingly small actions. For example, you should wear sunscreen every day. Many liquid foundation formulas include a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF.
Be sure to protect all of your vulnerable skin. I know I have made the mistake of focusing on the skin around my eyes, forehead, and mouth while neglecting my neck and hands. These areas need special care just like your face!
You can still feel fabulous over forty as long as you take good measures to care for your skin and all of its special needs.
