The Emergency Stretcher: A Staple of Human Life

No one knows when the Emergency Stretcher was first invented, but it's believed that they came before the wheel because archeological evidence indicates that sleds were already being towed along. It would appear that such sleds were just picked up one day and carried by two people, especially when transporting those who were injured or infirm, for whom movement had to be very careful so as to not aggravate their existing discomfort. And while there may have been domesticated animals like horses and cattle at the time, the prone positioning available only on a stretcher is clearly superior and preferable.

An emergency stretcher today is much more comfortable and portable, and indeed some models are even extremely mobile, such as ambulance stretchers. And unlike the simple materials of primitive times, today's sturdy constructions offer solid welding and ergonomic designs, able to traverse even the rough terrain that sometimes rendered yesterday's stretchers useless. Back then they were just man-sized litters or baskets hitched onto shoulder poles, requiring at least two people to carry, while modern models can need as little as just one attendant - even, depending on one's definition (for advanced technology continues to redefine our world), none at all sometimes, other than the person being transported, operating any number of self-propelled electric devices currently on the market.

The modern emergency stretcher is also very versatile and may even serve as full-fledged hospital beds, depending on the model, and can also serve as gurneys as well as ambulance stretchers. Advanced features like collapsibility and locking castors allow a wide range of uses in a host of different situations. Ergonomic straps and other tie-downs can be employed to prevent injury to both the transportee and the transporter - for a good stretcher not only physically stabilizes the rescued, but also allows the rescuer to operate safely, quickly, and efficiently. With superior construction and quality materials, well thought-out stretcher designs can significantly enhance the care giving effort in many ways.

But useful as they are, they can serve many non-emergency roles, simply doubling, as previously noted, as ordinary hospital beds and gurneys for patients needing nothing more than to be able to lay down. And a stretcher is not always the most appropriate equipment for those situations where other equipment would make more sense, like wheelchairs. But stretchers are indispensable to modern health care and rescue, and will remain among the first pieces of hardware utilized.
