Every dog owner has been in the situation where they need to purchase pet food. As a new owner of a dog, the first time you go shopping for food is a little overwhelming. You go to your local pet store, and you are faced with an aisle full of all different types of dog food. There are shelves and shelves of different brands, different flavors and different textures. How on earth do you know which type and brand of food to buy? A lot of people go for the cheapest food they can find, because looking at all the brands, the pictures on the cans look the same- they all show fresh vegetables and meats, so why not buy the cheapest?

If you truly want what's best for your pet, you should never buy food for your dog based on what is cheapest on the market. While not always the case, the cheapest food typically is the least healthy for your dog, as it contains a bunch of fillers on top of the meats and vegetables that it advertises. Just because it has pictures of healthy ingredients on the outside of the package doesn't mean that the majority of what's inside is what's on the picture.

Before you choose a food for your pet, you should know which breed of dog you have. The best dog food for your pet is one made for your type of dog because different breeds have varying nutritional requirements. For example, if you have a small breed of dog like a Chihuahua or a pug, you need to choose a food made for those sorts of dogs. If you have a German shepherd or a mastiff, you would need to choose a food formulated for a large breed. This is also true for the amount of activity your dog does. If you have a very active dog, you would want to purchase a food that is formulated with a high amount of protein, vitamins and minerals, as your dog will need this to fuel his activity. If you have a dog that isn't very active, like a bulldog, you could still use this type of food, but you should feed your pet much less so that it doesn't gain weight.

When you go to purchase the best dog food for your dog, you should browse the ingredients on the can before you buy anything. While there will be a long list of ingredients in the can, the first few (three to five) are what make up the predominant percentage of the food. If a food has rice, potatoes or corn as the first or second ingredient, then the food is mostly filler, and is not the best dog food for your pet.

If you look for it, you can even find organic dog food for your pet. These foods are made with ingredients that are not infused with hormones, chemicals or other things that could be harmful for your dog in the long run. While these can be very expensive, these foods can help prolong the life of your pet because they will not harm your dog's health.
