The arrival of a baby is an extremely exciting event for most couples. For a lot of women, the wait for their baby to finally come into the world can be excruciating. In fact almost all those who are expecting a baby, want to find out the exact day when their baby will be born.

Knowing that date of the baby's arrival can help in several things. For one, it gives time to the parents to adjust to the idea of having a baby and to take on the additional responsibility. There are many issues, big and small, that may need to be given attention too. Arranging for maternity leave, hospital stay, baby supplies, readying the nursery, planning for family visits, preparing a schedule for the care of the baby-all of it takes time.

A doctor can easily calculate your expected due date using a simple calculation. The average gestational period of the pregnancy is about forty weeks, roughly 266 days from the day of conception and about 280 days from the first day of your last normal menstruation cycle. Another way to do this calculation is to simply add nine months and 7 days to the first day of your last menstrual period. This can help you work out your expected due date yourself.

It is important to remember that the expected due date is simply a date around which you can expect to have a baby. It is not necessary that the due date which the doctors have reported to you will be the exact date on which your child will be born.

This calculation works on the principle that your menstrual cycle lasts twenty eight days. However, this only happens in a perfect situation. Your typical cycle may be different from the 28 day cycle. The expected due date changes significantly if you do not ovulate on the fourteenth day of your cycle. Even the forty weeks of the gestation is typically not correct because for the first two weeks, you haven't yet conceived and are simply ovulating.

The actual birth may take place around ten days before or after the expected due date if the pregnancy is full term. In case, the pregnancy is not full term, delivery can occur any time between the twentieth to the thirty second week. This is known as a pre term pregnancy and it occurs when the woman goes into labor much earlier than expected due to unforeseeable circumstances.
