If losing a few pounds is on your agenda for 2010, you're not alone. Statistics show that millions of people make a commitment to shed extra weight for the New Year, but few actually pull it off. If you want to be one of the successful folks, here are some strategies to help you make that goal a reality.

--Enlist a partner

No matter how committed you think you are, it's amazingly difficult to keep up your weight loss regimen over the long term. If you have a partner with the same goals, you will be much more likely to succeed. If your spouse could lose a few pounds, you could support one another by both eating healthier and exercising together. Even a friendly competition among coworkers is a great motivator: keep an anonymous weight loss chart in a prominent place in the office and you can watch and encourage each other's progress.

--Find a plan that you can live with

Crash diets never work over the long term. Period. Why? Because you'll be hungry and cranky all the time, and your health will suffer. No doubt you'll lose weight initially, but your metabolic rate will adjust accordingly; after awhile, when you want to eat normally, your body's metabolic rate will be so low that you may just put all the weight on again and then some.
