The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently released a study that found nearly 50 percent of all traumatic brain injuries (TBI) "are caused by collisions involving cars, motorcycles and bicycles." The recent findings contradict news reports that most brain injuries result from explosive devices among U.S. soldiers fighting the war in Iraq.

Additionally, according to the study, approximately "20 percent [of brain injuries] are caused by violence, such as gunshot wounds or incidents of child abuse." The report also found that "among older people, falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries."

TBI Complications

A TBI is what is known as an "acquired brain injury or simple head injury that occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain." TBI can result because of a number of reasons and can range from a simple mild case of brain injury to a moderate and severe brain injury that could result in coma or death. The following, according to NIH, are common TBI complications that can develop following an incident.

- headache
- confusion
- lightheadedness
- dizziness
- blurred vision or tired eyes
- ringing in the ears
- bad taste in the mouth
- fatigue
- change in sleep patterns
- behavioral or mood changes
- trouble with memory
- concentration and attention issues
- vomiting
- nausea
- convulsions
- seizures
- inability to awaken from sleep
- dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes
- slurred speech
- weakness or numbness in the extremities
- loss of coordination
- increased confusion
- restlessness
- agitation

Legally Overcoming a TBI Incident

It can be extremely difficult for a brain-injured patient to overcome his or her injuries, which is why it is imperative that a TBI patient receive assistance from not only a neurological specialist, but also to receive help from an attorney specializing in head injuries.

Discussing a traumatic brain injury lawsuit with a professional physician as well as an experienced brain injury attorney could result in being awarded monetary compensation to pay for costly treatments. Most TBI attorneys will offer a free legal consultation to patients suffering from such an incident in order to provide them with the most informative details on developing a TBI lawsuit, which may be a necessary step to protect a TBI victim from impending complications.
