Having bad breath is a major cause of low self-esteem. Seeing people turning away from you, covering their nose or totally avoiding you can be so discouraging. Unfortunately, this is not limited to a few people; anybody can suffer from this condition, also known as halitosis. Men, women, children, babies and even pets can have smelly mouths. Fortunately, this is a condition that can be healed. Bad breath remedies are now widely available. It is just a matter of choosing which among the halitosis remedies available is the best one to use.

However, before we can even go to the halitosis remedies, we must first look at the causes of this stinky condition. The cause of bad breath is different for everybody.

The first consideration is to have a look at your oral hygiene practice. The mouth, teeth and gums must be cleaned daily. Brushing the teeth alone is not enough. Bacteria can still be found just below the tongue's surface, in between the teeth and teeth that have leaks and cavities in it. A good oral hygiene practice is to brush and floss the teeth regularly to get rid of the food particles that may be left. Brushing or scraping the tongue with a tongue scraper will also get rid of food particles that harbor bacteria. Food particles that have been left in the mouth and sugar from sweet drinks also cause bacteria to grow causing smells. Therefore it is a good idea to swish water in the mouth and rinse after you take your snacks.

A person who suffers from infection in the sinus can also suffer from a smelly mouth. This is why post-nasal drip and bad breath also go together. Infections of the tonsils such as tonsillolith and bad breath are also partners. In general, any infection located in the mouth, gums and throat may harbor bacteria thereby causing halitosis.

Diet must also be investigated. Certain spices such as garlic, onion and curry cause smells in the mouth. Camembert and Roquefort cheese are also culprits, and drinking coffee may cause you to have coffee breath. The aroma of coffee is really good but not if it's coming from the mouth of the person who just drank it. Avoiding or even lessening the intake on these foods may already solve a person's bad breath problem. Eating more fruits and vegetables will also help to clean our digestive system giving us fresher breath.

It is also possible that you may be lacking in some supplements in the body. A deficiency in Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Zinc may also be the cause for some people. However, consult your physician first before taking any extra supplements.

There are certainly many other causes and remedies of smelly mouth conditions that have not been included in this article. The Bad Breath Bible, which is now offered for free either in print or in PDF, contains a more thorough study of the causes of the stink and how it can be remedied permanently.
