Most of us are born with healthy skin. It is aging, the sun, and other conditions arise at a later time in life that cause our skin to become unhealthy or to look worn or aged. Our skin is the only thing protecting our vital and sensitive organs, muscles, and bones from exposure. For this and other reasons, it's vitally important that we keep our skin as healthy as possible. Healthy skin will not only look great but it will help you feel great as well. Listed below are a few essential tips for caring for your skin.

The number one factor in unhealthy skin is exposure to the sun. More than anything else, harmful UV rays can cause problems to healthy skin. Exposure to the sun not only causes cosmetic damage, it can cause serious physical problems as well, like skin cancer. Although it's not possible for most of us to avoid the sun all of the time, you can take precautions by applying sunscreen every single day. Even in the winter when the temperatures drop and the sun doesn't seem so hot and threatening, harmful UV rays can still cause damage. Also, the SPF number of your sunscreen is important as well. The lower the SPF the less protection you are getting from harmful UV rays. Another way to protect from UV rays is to avoid willingly exposing your skin via tanning beds. A better option is a tanning lotion or spray tan.

Another great way to keep your skin looking healthy is to avoid smoking. Smoking causes decreased blood flow in the layers of the skin, which depletes the skin's oxygen and nutrients. Smoking also damages the fibers of your skin that are responsible for elasticity and strength. Smoking has also been attributed to wrinkling.

Keeping your skin clean is also an important part of healthy skin. Whether you have oily or dry skin, regular cleansing is important for keeping your pores clear of harmful oils and dead skin cells. When washing your face, treat the skin gently. Avoid strong soaps. Use only gentle cleansers that are made specifically for your face. After cleansing, it is important to moisturize. Facial moisturizers come in many shapes and sizes. It can be difficult to find one that is right for you.

Pay attention to the skin type a moisturizer is made for. If it says it's for medium to oily skin types and your skin is dry, it's probably not the best moisturizer for you. It may take some experimentation to find the product that is best for you. If you have trouble finding a cleanser and moisturizer that work right, try talking to a doctor or dermatologist and see if they know of a product they can recommend.

Healthy skin is a matter of regular maintenance and care. By following these simple steps you can keep your skin looking healthy and fresh longer.
