Certain Medical Conditions Can Be Treated With Compression Stockings

Doctors sometimes recommend compression stockings for patients at risk for blood clots and varicose veins in the legs.

How do They Work?
People with bad circulation problems benefit by wearing specialized legwear through discreet and inexpensive hose made from nylon or spandex. The stockings apply firm pressure to the ankle, gradually decreasing the amount of pressure the higher it goes up the leg.

This aids in blood circulation. The further away veins and arteries are from the heart, the slower the circulation. For some, the circulation is so bad that artificial pressure from the hose will cause the blood to return to the heart, preventing life-threatening problems. Natural movement from the calves also helps the blood circulate the proper way.

Compression stockings were originally designed to help blood vessels keep fluids. These came in one style, knee-high, and one color, white, with a slim variety of sizes. Over the years, as the necessity of the stockings has increased with early diagnosis from medical professionals, the variety in hosiery has increased tremendously.

Colors and Other Features
They are now available in different shades of tan and basic black. White has been discontinued by most manufacturers, as its popularity has decreased considerably over the years. While knee-high stockings are still available, thigh-high and waist high hose are available for both men and women. Although men's pantyhose may sound unusual, they are a lifesaving treatment. Stockings are also available for unique circulation problems which may develop in pregnant women. A specially designed maternity line of compression pantyhose can be worn without interfering with the pregnancy. The height of the recommended hose is determined by the location of the abnormal leg circulation condition. In other words, the lower the blood clot or edema, the lower the stockings need to be. A variety of compression levels are now on the market, allowing for better circulation and breathability for swollen legs. These can be purchased through drugstores or online retailers without a prescription.

Deep Vein Thrombosis
One of the most common reasons people wear compression socks is when they have had problems with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition is also known as having blood clots. Part of the blood clot can break off and travel through the bloodstream, blocking a vein and preventing blood circulation. If it continues through the body, it can stop in the lungs or brain, called an embolism.

Other medical problems that may require stockings include hypertension, stasis or chronic swelling of the veins. Problems involving the lymphatic system can cause fluids to gather in legs, creating chronic swelling.
